Further thoughts on class #1

I have spent the last three weeks watching my students, and wondering how AT would support their studies. In one case, I have a student assessed for Kurzweil use, but who flat out refused to use it because "it had been tried before and didn't work". This young man would appear to be a perfect candidate, and I wonder if the technology was poorly presented or inappropriately used, as he is highly computer literate and very interested in word-dense studies such as my History 12 course. Although I have suggested a variety of other strategies (including support from the disability specialist) he is not interested and would prefer to struggle with the words.
I look forward to my continuing studies to further explore how to support him.

From my experience I have seen students refuse supports which I think is related to not wanting to appear different than their classmates.

In his case, I don't think that is it: most of my students use some form of adaptation.

My guess is he wasn't shown/taught how the AT could impact his life. It would be interesting to know how it was presented to him and what happened.

Kurweil!
